Dining Room Curtains With Valance

Chic curtains bring colour, pattern and texture to a room. But how do you pick the best style for your scheme? Start by deciding whether you want a formal or casual, traditional or contemporary style. And you'll also need to take practical considerations into account, such as the weight and transparency of the fabric and the shape and outlook of the window.

Quick and simple ready-mades

For speed and convenience, ready-made curtains are a great option. Here's what to take into account when deciding if they're right for your room.

PROS

  • They start at affordable prices.
  • You can buy them off the shelf and take them home ready to use.
  • They are often washable, so are very easy to keep clean
  • You'll find a good range of colours, including bright shades in washable cottons.

    CONS

    • You're restricted to standard lengths - usually 136cm, 182cm, and 228cm - and set widths - from 130cm to 228cm.
    • If you have a specific shade or pattern in mind, you may not find a ready-made curtain to match.
    • The finish is sometimes lower quality than with made-to-measure drapes. Always make sure you see an unwrapped curtain before you buy.

      Tailored made-to-measure styles

If your window has unusual proportions, you may have to get curtains made to measure. Curtains tailored to your needs are worth investing in if you want to match an existing furnishing scheme.

      PROS

      • They are made to an exact length and width to precisely fit your window.
      • You can select any fabric you like, as long as the weight is suitable.
      • You can choose how the curtain is attached to the pole or track (known as the heading) to suit your room.
      • Quality lining will improve the way they hang and the insulation they offer.
      • Cushions and other soft furnishings can be made to match them.

        CONS

        • They can be expensive and you may need to factor in the cost of dry-cleaning.
        • They are not easy to reassign to a different window.
        • You need to measure up carefully as mistakes will be costly. But some companies, such as Hillarys, will come and measure up for you  - and take care of installation.

          Which fabric?

Practical and style considerations come into play here.

Privacy -medium to heavyweight curtains will screen windows but may block out valuable daylight. Extend your pole beyond the window frame so curtains made from heavy fabric won't obstruct the light when open. Combine them with lightweight sheers to preserve your privacy while still letting in light.

Warmth - heavier fabrics such as velvet and wool will exclude draughts, as will medium-weight fabrics, if lined and interlined.

Light - lightweight fabrics let daylight filter through, while pale colours reflect. If draughts and privacy aren't a problem, consider unlined curtains or sheers, alone or combined with a blind.

Drape - use lighter fabric if you want to sweep it to one side to fit over holdbacks. Heavier fabrics are great for straight drops.

          What about the heading?

Curtains attach to a pole or track in different ways - known as a heading - which will affect their appearance and how they hang.

Eyelet - metal rings punched along the top of the curtain, which are threaded onto a pole. This style suits medium weight, unlined fabrics.

Pencil pleat - a regular, pleated effect that's quite formal. Good for long drapes and light-to-medium-weight fabrics.

Goblet pleat - elegant, large pleats form a cylinder at the top of the curtain. This type looks great on tall windows in heavyweight fabrics.

Pinch pleat - three folds of fabric are pinched into a pleat at regular intervals, forming a regular, gathered effect. Suitable for mediumweight fabrics. The uniform gathering also makes it suitable for larger patterns.

          Curtain fixings

How you hang your curtains is a key factor to consider.

          Stay on track

Tracks are efficient but not particularly attractive. Corded tracks have a looped cord to pull the curtain open from one end - useful for big windows, and, as you don't handle the fabric, it stays clean. Tracks can also be bent around curved or bay windows. Use them for curtains with a gathered heading tape.

          Take pole position

Made from wood or metal in various diameters, most curtain poles come with decorative finials or end pieces. They are best used at straight windows, but some come with bending sections for bay windows. Poles will take any sort of curtain heading, but check the diameter for eyelet headings.

          Try doubling up

Two poles fixed on the same brackets, one behind the other, let you hang sheer curtains behind the thicker ones.

          Don't spare the rod

Sheers and voiles hang from slim, adjustable rods. They can be tension rods, that 'push-fit' into the window recess, so you don't have to cut the pole to length. Or equally slim poles that are suspended from small hooks screwed into the window frame or recess wall.
